How to register a Domain?

What is a Domain?

Today let's discuss about the topic on how to register a domain name. But first, let's understand what domain is.

A domain  is a unique that is used to identify and access websites on the internet. It a way to navigate and locate specific web resources, such as websites or email servers.

This may seem like a complicated definition. Let me simplify it. A domain name is a name that you register under your name, and it cannot be taken by anyone else as long as you own it. And with the same domain name, you can build websites and/or create emails too.

How to register a domain name??

Step1:

Lets assume you wish to register a domain name called Technology.com. How do we know if this domain is taken??  Its simple, just visit https://whois.com and type in the domain name.

When we search for the domain name on the top right , we can see that technology.com was registered in 1994 by Dynandot company which we also call as domain registrar. So we cannot register technology.com again.

Lets try another one, how about Modernlifestyle.com??

Oops!! Looks like this one is taken as well. Just a small note, any domain name that is easy to remember and comparatively short by size have all been taken way long back before these Gen Z kids were born. Some domains names such as cars.com and insurance.com were sold by previous domain owners at a whopping price of $870 million. Yup you heard me right,
But those are premium domains and you don't have to warry about that. As a beginner you can look out for domains which are not so popular. Could be your full name or something else. For example lets search for MaryJohntaylor.com

You can see its available for $11.88. Some domains may cost $20 and some $50 and some $200. It all depends on the domain name that you think of, its length, how popular the name is.
There are many type of domains.

A top-level domain (TLD)

as the name suggests comes on top of hierarchical domain name system of the internet. It is the last part of a domain name that comes after the final dot. For example, in the domain name "finance.com," the TLD is ".com."

Top-level domains are categorized into two main types:

Generic Top-Level Domains:

These are general-purpose domain extensions that are not tied to any specific region or nation. Some popular ones include ".tech," ".space," ".net," ".org," and ".biz," among others.

Country Code Top-Level Domains :

These are domain extensions representing specific nations or territories. For example, ".in" for the India , ".us" for the United States, ".uk" and  for United Kingdom.

Step2:

Now that you know that your desired domain name is available, how do you register it under your name?

Simple, first you need to check out for some domain or hosting providers on the internet.  Let me get to the hosting part later.

You can again go to https://whois.com  and type for the domain name and purchase it.

Make sure to purchase domain privacy along with the domain name.

Domain privacy, is a service offered by domain registrars to protect the personal information of domain owners. When you register a domain name, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires that certain contact information, including the owner's name, address, email, and phone number, be made publicly available in the WHOIS database.

You can buy domains from any provider. You can try from Dreamhost too

So that was all about domains. Lets meet up in the next post...
